Classic Athletes in No Particular Order
Today, we celebrate the career of Tiki Barber of the NY Giants. He played for the Giants from 1997-2006. He then went on to appear on the Today Show, host the Golden Globes and cheat on his wife. After he retired from football, he went on to criticize Eli Manning for his leadership skills. Well guess what?? The very next season, Eli led the Giants to a Super Bowl Championship. He has also criticized Tom Coughlin, and Michael Strahan. What a teammate!!! Prior to the playoffs this season, Tiki asked for a sit down with the Giants to bury the hatchet..what happened? They said no. Go Giants!

Sports Recap - Thursday, January 19th

Lots of NBA action to cover today.

The Mavericks and Clippers squared off in L.A. last night. Chauncey Billups hit a game winning three pointer with a second remaining to win the game for the Clippers. L.A. was without Chris Paul again, but got Mo Williams back, who went off for 26 points. Listen, I love the Clippers, I think they’re fun to watch, but I do not see them getting past the second round in the playoffs. Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan have zero post moves, not a single one. Blake Griffin’s post moves include lowering his shoulder into the defender and going straight, or throwing his elbows around. When he runs into some smart post defenders in the playoffs, they’ll sell those calls and get Griffin on the bench. The Clippers are fun to watch, but are they better than the Thunder? No. Are they better than the Lakers? I’m not so sure. The Spurs will be fine in the playoffs, so will the Mavericks, Nuggets and Blazers. It’ll be interesting, but I still think they have some development to do before they take the league over.

The Wizards knock off the Thunder. The Knicks continued their losing ways by falling to the Suns, 91-88. For two offensive juggernauts these two teams really struggled getting the ball into the basket. Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudamire combined for 10-44 from the field. You won’t win many games when your two superstars are putting up those numbers. There are some serious problems in the Garden right now. The Knicks don’t have a pick and roll game, they can’t hit three’s, they don’t have a PG (until Baron is healthy), and their superstars seem to cancel the other one out. For a team, with such huge expectations its been a tough season. If I’m a Knicks fan though, I don’t lose faith just yet. Carmelo is one of the best scorers in the league, he can win you any game. Baron Davis will eventually contribute to the team, and he’s an instant upgrade over anything else at point guard. It takes a while for a team to gel, especially one that is so incredibly different than the team that was in place this time last year. Have faith Knick fans.

The Nets knock off the Warriors, 107-100 behind Deron Williams, Humphries and MarShon Brooks. Brooks has had a fantastic start to the season. If the Rookie of the Year vote was today, I’d say it has to go…1. Rubio. 2. MarShon. 3. Irving. Not too bad for a player who was drafted 25th overall.

NFL Playoffs this weekend. Giants vs. Niners and Ravens vs. Pats. Manning left Giant’s practice early with the stomach virus, Ed Reed called out Flacco, and Rob Lowe reported that Peyton Manning is going to retire. I love it Rob, get some pub for Parks and Recreation. I’ll have my playoff picks tomorrow.

Andy Roddick left in the second round of the Australian Open due to a leg injury. Suuuure…I’m sure he just wanted to get back to this…

Sports Recap - Tuesday, January 17th

I won’t recap the divisional playoff games, because if you own a tv or are able to log onto any sports site on the internet, you’ve seen way too much coverage already. I can say the following, I went 1-3 against the spread (KILLING IT), and it looks like it’ll shape up to a Giants - Pats reunion of the 07 Super Bowl. We’ll discuss the NFL playoffs more, later this week.

NBA action is in full swing…the Lakers are looking good, apparently Dwight Howard wants to be traded to Clippers, the Knicks look awful each game, and my Nets look really awful. Each season with the Nets, I think….”you know what they have some talent, if they can put it together, they could be exciting to watch and maybe try to sneak into the playoffs.” Well they’re 3-11, and once again I’m looking forward to next season already. It reminds me of the classic Family guy clip about NY Mets fans.

I really like rookie, MarShon Brooks, and think he’ll be a great building piece as they move into Brooklyn. Every game I watch, the only players that seem to want to try are…MarShon, DeShawn, Morrow, Gaines and Sheldon Williams. It really can be depressing at times, when every single season you look forward to the next one. BROOKLYN 2012 HERE WE COME.

Not too much else to report, hope everyone had a great 3 day weekend, and continue to follow the HiLo Huddle!

GQ: Quick hypothetical, toes aside: Let’s say the game was tied. 10 seconds left. You had 30 points, LeBron’s got 30, and Wade’s got 30. You got the same amount of rebounds, same amount of assists—having the same great game. Who takes the shot at the end to either win or loose the game.
Chris Bosh: [immediately] Dwyane.

Sports Recap - Friday, January 13th (FRIDAY THE 13TH EDITION)

It’s Friday the 13th everyone…spooky (Jim Jones voice)…Happy Friday! Today we’ll cover some NBA action, Penn State, BCS and our NFL Picks!

First we’ll head to Oakland for the Warrors vs. Magic last night. It was a Hack-A-Dwight night yesterday, and boy did Dwight respond. 45 points, 23 rebounds, 1 trade demand…as a Nets fan I sure hope that last part doesn’t change. Holy moly, that line is ridiculous. The previous trade proposal included up to 5 future 1st round draft picks, if I’m NJ I include the draft picks, Soprano DVD’s, Gov. Chris Christie, anyone from the Jersey Shore, and Rutgers University. Anything to bring Dwight to Jersey, that man is a beast.

The Miami Heat play the Denver Nuggets tonight…I heard Tebow is playing center for the Nuggets now.

Scott Paterno needs to SHUT THE HELL UP….He said the following, “As has become apparent, the termination on November 9, with no notice or hearing, was not handled well.” Hey Scott, do you know what else wasn’t handled well? When your father allowed a child molester at Penn State University, knew he was raping children and did NOTHING. I realize the NCAA probably won’t do anything, but if there’s ever a situation for the Death Penalty this is it. Give me a break, they allowed a child molester to continue to attack children for YEARS, and now they’re angry Joe wasn’t fired in the correct way. Give me a break. The Paterno family is a disgrace and needs to go away.

The NCAA president favors a 4 team college football playoff. Hey, its not perfect, but anything is better than nothing. MAKE IT HAPPEN.

NFL Divisional Series Weekend——YEAH BABY

New Orleans Saints (-4) vs. San Francisco 49ers.
I’m going with the Saints giving 4 points against the 49ers. I realize the Saints aren’t as strong on the road as they are at home, but damn that offense is ridiculous. I think they have 8 WR’s, their TE is the best in the game and he used to be a basketball player. The Saints bar in NYC is Bar None too, can’t hate on that.

Denver Broncos (+13.5) vs. New England Patriots
I’m taking Denver Broncos getting 13.5 points against the Patriots. The Pats will win this game, but not by two touchdowns. TebowMania has gone full throttle on ESPN…yesterday during a single hour of SportsCenter the word “Tebow” was mentioned 160 times. Imagine this guy made it to the Super Bowl…holy shit. There was a rumor that Tebow is currently dating Katy Perry…imagine Tebow did a full 180 and started dating Kim Kardashian. He’s America’s most popular athlete and she’s one of America’s most despised people. Who wins out, does Tim fix Kim’s popularity or does Kim bring Tim back down to hell that is the Kardashian clan. I don’t think anyone can escape the Kardashian hate, and considering Tebow is so polarizing to begin with, there would be no coming back. Well anyways….

Houston Texans vs. Baltimore Ravens (-7.5)
Baltimore cruises. The best part of NFL broadcasts are the player introductions on NBC. Unfortunately, no games will be played on NBC this week. If there were I’d want to see the Ravens, Texans game. Terrell Suggs is from Ball So Hard University fyi.

New York Giants vs. Green Bay Packers (-7.5)
I like Green Bay giving up 7.5 points. The Giants receivers are dangerous, but Green Bay is something else. Aaron Rogers is a beast, their backup QB threw up 450+ yards, a well oiled machine that will beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl.

Dwight Howard at the free throw line….Dwight had 39 FTA last night against the Warriors. Ended w/ a line of 45 Points and 23 Rebounds…not too bad

Classic Athletes in No Particular Order
Today’s Athlete - Big Country Bryant Reeves. He was the 6th overall pick in the 1995 NBA Draft and he played for 6 seasons with the Vancouver Grizzlies. Can’t find too much more information on him other than that he retired due to injuries mid way through the 01-02 NBA season. Hopefully he’s out there hunting or fishing somewhere.

If there’s really a problem, if there is something wrong, you should man up and own up to what you’re going to say. When no one has their name attached to it, I think it’s kind of an easy way out to air your personal grievances that should be kept in the locker room.

Sports Recap - Thursday, January 12th

The Heat traveled to L.A. last night for their only matchup of the regular season against the Los Angeles Clippers. This was the first time all season I’ve had a chance to catch a Clippers game. My thoughts…1. Blake Griffin needs to learn some type of post move, in the 4th quarter the Clippers offense consists of Paul driving and kicking to either Caron Butler or Billups, or attempting a layup or floater. If the Clippers are to go far within the playoffs, DeAndre Jordan or Blake Griffin need to demand the ball in the post and be able to do something with it. 2. The Heat trapped the Clippers point or wing player every single time in the corner. The ball needs to stay in Paul’s hands, and if Griffin or Jordan had a post move the Heat wouldn’t be able to trap every single time down the court. 3. Don’t pencil in the Clippers for the title just yet .

There were a few things I learned from the Miami Heat as well last night, well…..no. LeBron still chokes in the fourth quarter. He couldn’t make a layup, couldn’t make a jumper, and clearly couldn’t make a free throw. With under 10 seconds left, LeBron gets fouled, the Heat are down 2 and he’s at the line. Jordan makes these, Kobe makes these, Dirk makes these, Lebron….he goes 1 for 2 and the ball falls out of bounds off a Clipper defender. Heat ball! They inbound the ball, run the same play, LeBron drives misses the layup and gets fouled. If he makes both free throws, the Heat win the game…LeBron goes 1 for 2. Paul misses his floater on the other end and they head to overtime. The Clippers run away with it in overtime. In the final 5 minutes, LeBron went 6 for 10 from the line, and missed three consecutive field goals. I tweeted last night the following, “Thought I’d have to wait til May to see a Lebron choke job…who knew it’d start in January.” If the Heat want to win, GIVE THE BALL TO WADE. SIT LEBRON, he’s a great regular season and 3 quarter player, but in the playoffs and the 4th quarter, SIT HIM DOWN. Wade is just an absurd basketball player, and Bosh is playing much more confident as well. Let’s see how the Heat respond after this two game losing streak.

Kobe goes for 40 last night, as the Lakers beat the Utah Jazz in overtime. Kobe is fantastic, but what is truly amazing is how great the Jazz and Nuggets are. These two teams were supposed to roll over and die, when they lost Deron Williams and Carmelo. Rather, both of these teams are better than the teams that acquired those two players. Maybe there is something to be said about building a team rather than creating a super-team. This comes from a die hard Nets fan, who is still holding out hope for Dwight. We’ve already mortgaged our future, might as well have that pay off, but it’s exciting to see a young team built and see their players develop. I’ll always root for a team like the Jazz, Nuggets, or Thunder.

Anonymous sources are ripping Mark Sanchez to the media. Anonymous, hah…tell Santonio Holmes to shut up.

Things I’m looking forward to….Tiger Woods, Jim Rome on CBS, more LeBron choke jobs, the Brooklyn Nets, Parks and Recreation tonight, the Mets pitchers complaining the wall is too close now, and the 2012 Olympics.
